I'm not running X with a monitor you insensitive clod.

Actually, I am running X in a VNC session.  It isn't connected to a monitor 
at all.  It is only visible when I run a VNC client on another machine.

I suppose that really means that X is not responsible for the monitor 
frequencies, and doesn't need to know them.  I don't quite know how X 
works, but I suggest that the System Administrator has installed the 
correct video driver for the System, the video driver supplies X with a 
list of its capabilities, and X selects which one to use (based on some 
"best" algorithm, or a user choice).

I could be talking through my hat of course.
