Ok, thanks Brett/chris for suggestions. have tried different cable to
usb hub & directly plugging in to front & back usb ports all with the
same result. 
why do these things seem to always crap out a couple of months after
the 12months warranty expires?? might have to try & disguise
 replacement from wife (was a present from her).
