Thanks for additional tips, Barry, Steve, Volker. 1. The scanner is the only USB device connected to this machine and is connected directly (no external hub).
2. /etc/sane.d/dll.conf had only "epson" uncommented. I tried commenting out "epson" and uncommenting "epkowa", then running iscan. This enabled iscan to start, but it still failed (repeatedly) with a could-not-send-command-to-scanner message. I'm now away on business x 36 hours - will of course check back in when I return. =====Andrew
