How can I track the rest of the chain in procmail to just plonk the responses?

I would suggest that procmail is the wrong level to be doing that.

It means every time you spot a "thread jack" you have to update your
procmail filter, and it will only filter future mails in the thread
jack, not ones you have already filtered.

A better approach is to use a thread aware mailer and just skip past it.

Oh what marvels of peace and sanity are achieved with the handy "D" for
delete key!

Personally I use pine
  http://www.washington.edu/pine/

The other Good Thing is since it is text only all the pains and security
hazards of "smart" mailers just plain don't happen.

Yes, yes, I know it is "free as in free beer", not as in "freedom", I
keep meaning to move off it to the "mutt" mailer or something that has
the same features. Trouble is I'm too use to pine now and "pine" is
"free enough for now"

The critical feature here to look for is "thread aware mailer" or "sort
by thread".
