Is Bryce en route for fouling up his ?.?? install?

To avoid this, install the correct Ubuntu package(s) for the software you require - if available. Or the nearest (Debian-based) version.

Bryce,

Can Ubuntu handle rpm's?
You might be able to use alien to convert them to deb's.

Yes, this does work. That's how I installed the vmware server that I now use.

Synaptic has, for Ubuntu:

"X.Org X server -- VMware display driver
This package provides the driver for VMware client sessions, i.e. if Linux is running inside a VMware session.

More information about X.Org can be found at:
<URL:http://xorg.freedesktop.org>
<URL:http://lists.freedesktop.org/mailman/listinfo/xorg>

This module can be found as the module 'driver/xf86-video-vmware' at
:pserver:[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/cvs/xorg"

non-Ubuntu (Debian) modules & source are available with vmware-player:

"Free virtual machine player from VMware
The free VMware Player lets you run pre-built virtual machines on
your desktop. You can run multiple operating systems side-by-side,
easing the process of software development, testing, and evaluation.

Virtual machines developed in VMware Workstation, ESX Server, or
VMware Server can be run in VMware Player.

To run the VMware Player, just run /usr/bin/vmplayer from within X.

Note: You will also need the VMware Player kernel modules to run vmplayer. These can be built from source from vmware-player-kernel-source, or you can install a pre-built vmware-player-kernel-modules package for your kernel."
