If you can build an AP cheaper then buying one then go for it.
I have offered use of one already built, and can demonstrate how it
works whenever required.
If you are going to buy one, then a good option is the Linksys WRT54GL which
is pretty cheap, and is sold pretty much specifically for loading custom
Linux firmware on. It's ~$150

My tests of the WRT54GL, in and around a brick building, confirm its
impressive signal strength.

Active GNU/Linux promotional spending would be more effective for group
continuity though, imho.
