Used both before for different requirements. 
Compare is more mathematical in nature - ie. What are the differences
between a sharp and fuzzy image?
Convert can do almost anythuing but is more computationally expensive.

Must admit that, like you have mentioned, I've found convert to be the
more useful of the tools.
