Hi Bryce,
Great. Thanks. Now I know we're both looking at the same O/S.

If I edit it with 'sudo -e xorg.conf' to get root I still can't

You must have mistaken this - it's a nonsensical command, as far as I
can tell: opening up a blank 'xorg.conf' in /var/tmp/ - no use at all.
Linux Ubuntu-bryces 2.6.15-26-386 #1 PREEMPT Thu Aug 3 02:52:00 UTC 2006
i686 GNU/Linux
BUT - I can now get gedit from command line, and edit file and save it.
That would only be from off your desktop terminal. You're better off
getting to know:
$ sudo nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf'
and more:
$ apt-get install mc [if you have all repositories enabled]
$ mc /etc/X11/xorg.conf
*But first you should:*
$ sudo cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.bak
Must be one of those magical computer moments, or maybe the reboots, I
don't know..... anyway I'll see if I can get monitor to behave now.....
Have you looked in Gnome's panel?:
System - Preferences - Screen Resolution
No setting options in there? - CRTs should have some, but LCDs not.
Just checking.
Regards,
