> So what are you running on the P3 450? Latest model Linux, but no graphical software. Ok, you can install graphical programs and run them over the network for the occasional job, if you're prepared to put up with the performance hit.
Having said that, I run SUSE 10.1 on a P3-450 with 512MB RAM. It's slow, but it works, including open office. More often though the P3 is used a graphics terminal only, obtaining a graphical login screen on a more powerful computer. PII class machines can be bought starting $50 with 128MB RAM. They're good for firewalls etc, and any hardware less than that should be earmarked for the dump. Linux will work on it, but it simply isn't worth the time to install it. Btw try SUSE 10.0 instead of 10.1, it isn't quite so resource hungry, and might have a different hardware detection. Are you sure the install hangs in the hardware detection stage? In general, I think it would be fair to advise against using any *BSD for a desktop machine, especially to beginners. Stay with something mainstream. (I'm not interested in BSD/linux arguments, but *BSD is not mainstream on any desktop.)
