Nearly all *nixes have a /usr/share/dict/words (or /usr/dict/words) file.
This is great for those of us competent with regular expressions who
like to play with words. And for those who don't know reg-exps, it's a
great way to learn.
What words end in erty?
grep erty$ /usr/share/dict/words
No names in the dict though, so Gerty and Bery aren't there.
Writing a poem to your loved one and need something to rhyme with wife?
grep ife$ /usr/share/dict/words
Want to know if there are any words with all 6 vowels in their
alphabetical order?
grep .*a.*e.*i.*o.*u.*y words
Any words with 4 or more vowels in a row where the vowels aren't
preceded by a q? We'll need egrep for that:
egrep [^q][aeiou]{4} words
With knowledge like this, you'll be a hit at parties.
Cheers,
Carl.
