There's no "all".. A dominant culture? - yes..
Means nothing IMHO.
A complete explanation is scheduled for Wednesday.
It's the intentional fsking up of newbie's Ubuntu installs that is
obvious & gets me.
If you think anyone on this list gets satisfaction from intentionall stuffing
up someone's installation you should think again.
Anti-ubuntuism is very apparent to (not just) me. But you & Jim are
correct - it's the baby going out with the bathwater, rather than a
conscious kernelcide, IMHO. The rip-it-out-and-replace starting point
runs counter to what is usually said about faulted (GNU/)Linux installs,
like a kind of prejudice.
& btw I recommended Suse in one recent instance - not the first.
I also think that Suse is fantastic "out of the box".
My recommendation of Suse for Agere modems seems outdated now, going by
recent threads. I retract it.
..The 'Mepis'/kde 'one-size-fits-all' push aggression is narrowing the
support stream, ignorantly it seems.
How can it? It is based on Debian and Ubuntu - it is the same "under the
hood".
Because 'fighting your way through the bonnet latches' (desktop
tweaking) works differently, all methods should be readily developed &
supplied.
The point on top of this is that through the Sydenham Freenix workshops
we've ensured that twice as much monthly, free, in-person system support
is available. And we're trying to upskill a group around the simplest
server-functional software toolset, with a focus on BSD/Debian/Ubuntu,
rather than deal with residual CLUG repairwork. Everything other than
B/D/U(/LNX) is what tends to show up though, and we deal with it ok (eg
Warwick's Kubuntu printing) - but there is a (less-consumerist) point to
our community theme though: computing ethics.
Alan et. al. are invited to explore this current too -
http://www.hackstop.org/index.php/Current_events for workshop dates. We
have a phone line there, and have, since our inception, catered
specifically to dialup needs.
Ask Bernard - did it work for him?
Yes I believe. He was very impressed with the speed of installation and the
fact that his multimedia requirement were met straight away. He/we could not
get his camera working but that was not a Mepis problem.
I haven't seen Ubuntu (Gnome) fail with a camera yet, but KDE problems
are expected.
Similar departures forecast.
I have discussed this with a few and we have a differing opinion as to the
reasons for some "departures".
This is an important theme on which we should all compare notes.
As I see it, (GNU/)Linux only has one problem - Users.
In that there are approx. two types: GNU/Linux Users (who tend to be
highly skilled technically but less so communicatively, except for
technese); & those for whom GNU/Linux is too difficult or lacking in
*provision for them to consider it (for very long) / WinUsers.
Bridging this seismic gulf is our greatest challenge, for *nix continuity.
Get your facts straight please.
Pot, meet Kettle.

Hi Kettle. I've brought scourers :)
But the detail is to follow (cWeds).
