No you can not. Detecting the type of chip is not the same as the chip driver working correctly for this particular version of the chip. It should not be too difficult to work out whether the problem is with the driver or ppp by looking carefully at the ppp logs. Besides, this is off topic in this thread. "Lucent Agere" is internal; for external modems, the chipset is of no interest. The internal modem with the external connection Rik was describing is most definitely best treated like the plague.
