There are two things which are worth doing when you get things like this: 1) checking that your file system(s) are ok using fsck 2) checking that your memory is ok using memtest86 Both of these utilities are on the Knoppix Live CD and should be on the install Live CD from which you installed. These tasks take - relatively speaking - just a moment, and eliminate hardware problems which can cause symptoms similar to those which you are having. -- CS
