Hi Alan,

You can boot from the Mepis CD too (it is a Live CD as well as an install 
CD), and do the same experiment that you just did with the Knoppix CD.

I would suggest that there is not actually something wrong with your Mepis 
installation, but rather that your kppp settings under Mepis are, um, no 
longer correct, since you have made many changes based on suggestions here 
on the list.  You need to somehow roll back those changes.

It *would* be interesting to see if the Knoppix CD correctly identifies and 
operates your winModem.
