Yes. It didn't take browser writers to long to figure out that the
browser of preference from an ISP was the one that did smart stuff like
put http://www. in front of things and then even go for a .com or .co.nz
based on local. Helpdesks number 2 question... 'why can't I get to...'
(Number 1 question - why isn't my modem working... err do I have to
switch it on every time I use the PC?)

I think it tries what you say first and if there's no www. then it has
another go.
I remember when browsers got clever enough to try the www. if they needed
to. I also remember when browsers got clever enough to assume http:// on
an address, saving an awful lot of typing.
Me too.
If you want http://www.domain.co.nz/ to point to a different place to
http://domain.co.nz/ you are going to confuse people.
Yes, I agree, it's not best practice. I recall there were sites where
people did do that and it did create utter confusion.
