I've seen the crank on record players (made of plastic through and through; 
steel speaker plate mounted on the needle for that lo-fi sound! ;) and on 
cassette players/recorders.  They came along too late for the tape recorders 
- thumping great big tubs of electronics with the reels mounted on the top 
and the speaker in the front; anyway you can't realistically run tube/valve 
electronics on someone cranking the thing. ;)  Very high quality, made in 
Germany in the late 50s, and I think my Dad's one would still run, if I knew 
how to get it started.
