I'm almost there now.
Most of the battle has been working out the syntax of just a few
commands, once I've got that under my belt I'll be away as most of what
you do in Linux is consistent. I just don't happen to know 'the way'
yet... but I'm getting there thanks.
Don't get me wrong thou, once I've got this php and shell scripting
down, I'm going to be back to python, I've noticed a bunch of you seem
to like it.
Cheers Don

Don, this is a fascinating exercise I am sure, but why hurt yourself?
Write it in Python!
In half an hour you could have installed Python and written 'Hello world'.
Writing to a database is only fractionally harder (and you get for... loops
too!).
