It doesn't really matter how you do your backups, as long as they include
all your important files (both personal and configuration files) and that
you store them off-site.

If not off site then at least in a separate building to your computers.

rsync over the net to a remote site can be a good scripted solution.

BackupPC looks great. 

An rsync based system that uses hard links definitely seems to be the way to
go.
