I think it's a good time to point out one of the fundamental differences 
between Linux and, say, MS Windows.  The Linux OS is essentially a 
text-based OS (much like a command window in XP).  In fact, Linux works 
perfectly well in text-only mode.  In Linux the GUI runs "on-top" of the 
OS, whereas in XP the GUI *is* the OS (i.e. they are inseparable).  Once 
you get that it's not hard to see how you can run many different GUIs on a 
given Linux installation.  In fact, since Linux is multi-user it is 
possible for all users of a single Linux system to have a different GUI 
(Maybe Gnome, KDE, fluxbox, ratpoison, etc), or for a single user to use a 
different GUI every time they log in.

So, choose your favourite distro (it's not Gentoo, it's Mepis), and your 
favourite GUI on top (it's KDE), and you're all set.
