As I work indirectly for one of said control freaks, I would say you're
right on the money! I managed to get linux working with a PCMCIA data card
too a little while ago and called the helpdesk as a courtesy to let them
know... You'd think I was dancing round a fire wearing a cloak of human skin
from the response I got!!

I bet you the control freaks at Telecom and Vodafone would crawl a
mile through broken glass before they actually Marketed & Sold such a
device on their networks.

If we want one, (and if it is indeed open and programmable) I do
indeed want one, we will have to import them ourselves.
