I've just done a couple of traceroutes to different hosts in Japan.
One went via AU, 'tother via US. Similar number of hops each time, about 
20 until they fizzled out, with * * *, lines inside the host's 
institutions.

Apart from the Australian east coast cities, the US West Coast is the 
nearest part of the overseas Internet world to us.
