That's the GNU one. What does
dpkg -S /usr/bin/md5sum
say on your system please? I would like to know the simplest and
official way to get that version.

3.1 is about 1.5 years old. A stable GNU md5sum with the features I
described has been available for at leat 6 years.

I won't ever consider running testing of any distro outside a sandbox. I
had to fix someone else's server with Debian testing once, that was
enough of a nightmare, thanks. But I wasn't interested in starting a
distro argument.
