I've had these for the last 8-9 months, and they go fine.

Be aware the latest version of the wrt54g is version 5, and that has half
the ram and half the flash that the previous version had.  V4 has linux, but
V5 runs a different OS by default.  You can buy the WRT54GL which is the
same as a V4 WRT54G.

The main reason I changed from the default system to OpenWRT is that my
network runs mostly on 192.168.0.0/16  And linksys is one of the few vendors
who obey the convention that a 192.168 network should be no larger than a
/24.  Apparently Cisco and Juniper do this too.  So I flashed all 34 units
with OpenWRT which was happy to let me use /16 on the LAN side.    I don't
use the router/WAN port for anything.
