I think some of the language they use is intentional, to change the way
we think and feel about copyright.

For example, instead of the correct term "copyright infringement", TV
news items these days almost always use the scarier-sounding but
meaningless term "copyright theft".

If people feel a connection between copyright infringement (say,
duplicating and sharing something with a friend without getting
permission from the copyright holder) and theft (physically depriving
someone of a possession, perhaps by violence), they're less likely to
oppose restrictive new copyright laws and technologies.

I'm not saying TVNZ is trying to brainwash us :p ... But there are
creepy groups like Federation Against Copyright Theft (FACT) with
branches in NZ, feeding stories to journalists, and there's nobody
providing balance.
