IDE - don't think so.  Compaq were rather "inverted" about using IDE...
Someone might put an IDE drive in their server then blame compaq for poor
performance.  Some compaq boxes with IDE are configured to not boot off
anything other than a CDROM drive.

As for drives, you'd need SCSI drives in the red/black compaq hot swap
caddies.

do 1 and 2 have either a ide controller hiding in them as well or pci slots?

I'm sure I could still make use of them.

I've got 3 chch students so I'm sure I could farm them out.

I've also got some hard disks left.
