Please use dd_rescue, it's been made for a very good reason (being that
dd doesn't do the job as needed to recover maximum data, and preferably
at maximum speed). The SUSE one is very good (from some @suse.de),
there's another one with the same name for which I can't speak. You get
a sparse file as output.

Almost certainly not, but your bios will if set to "protect mbr".


This is a good time to remind everyone that the output of fdisk -l,
followed by the output of fdisk -lu, kept safely on a piece of paper
WILL save your bum one day.
