Hi, After my 5 year old had been using the computer, linux (Ubuntu 6.06) would get part way through booting, then start shutting down. (Tried a couple of times) As if something in the boot procedure changed the runlevel to shutdown (can never remember those numbers) or something.
I booted in recovery/safe mode and couldn't find any log traces of the half-boot. And I noticed that the log messages from the recovery-mode boot were a couple of days in the future. I futzed around for a few minutes then typed "reboot". This time everything booted normally. Any ideas? My guess is that my son bumped the reset button with his toe (as he does from time to time) while linux was shutting down. The next time linux booted it still thought it was half way through shut down, and carried on where it left off. Cheers, Carl.
