here's a fairly standard sources.list for etch ( testing ). I use one of two,
as either the NZ or the AUS mirror, but not both, will work

-- 8< -- NZ
deb http://ftp.nz.debian.org/debian/ etch main non-free contrib
deb-src http://ftp.nz.debian.org/debian/ etch main non-free contrib

deb http://security.debian.org/ etch/updates main non-free contrib
deb-src http://security.debian.org/ etch/updates main non-free contrib
-- 8< -- /NZ

-- 8< -- AU
deb http://ftp.au.debian.org/debian/ etch main non-free contrib
deb-src http://ftp.au.debian.org/debian/ etch main non-free contrib

deb http://security.debian.org/ etch/updates main non-free contrib
deb-src http://security.debian.org/ etch/updates main non-free contrib
-- 8< -- /AU

as root, on the internet

  apt-get update
  apt-get dist-upgrade

hth,

Steve
