I found a functional HP-5200C scanner on TradeMe for $20, and it has worked well (although it is limited to scanning documents). Re-Googling the issue recently (I had bought the Epson scanner to scan medium-format transparencies, and a new scanner having that ability was going to cost many 100s of $), I found someone with the identical problem after upgrading Fedora Core 3 to 4 or 5. He had hit on the idea of trying the IEEE-1394 interface built into the Perfection 2450. This worked on Fedora Core, including editions on which the scanner would not run via USB. One IEEE-1394 card and one cable later, marian (AMD-64 running Ubuntu Dapper) is happily supporting this scanner. =====Andrew
