The short answer is: No.
The long answer is: Yes, but you have to _really_ know what you are doing.

You shouldn't need to. Most of the effort goes into selecting which distro does what you need, and has local support, from a good wide range. Thereafter stick with the package format that distro of choice uses, as little is generally unavailable for it. Having to switch between formats afterwards is a recipe for install-wreckage, imho.
