You've not told us exactly what you added to the file that screwed it up. Back
out the changes one by one.
This is why some blokes recommend keeping your home directory in
subversion. It allows you did see exactly what you did.

And if your editor is changing file permissions, ditch it! Sounds very
dangerous.
Changed it to "root only" he said. Sounds like he was working was
working as superuser on his own files.
