I've read http://www.xfce.org/documentation/4.2/manuals/xfce-mcs-plugins
I've got it installed according to apt, but I can't find the screens
they're reffering to.
Help?

Hi Don,
I have had a similar problem running Ubuntu 5.10 and other Distros on
an older machine and was able to overcome it by changing:
DefaultDepth 24
to
DefaultDepth 16 or DefaultDepth 15
Hope this is of some help.
