Do you have VMware Tools installed in the guest system, and is the "time synchronisation between the virtual machine and the host operating system" option enabled? For some reason it seems to be disabled by default. Under Windows it's a tray icon. I've just tested on a Suse guest machine and found the options by running vmware-toolbox as an ordinary user.
