Ok. Since your 'USB/serial connection substitute' surmise wasn't
answered at the time..
The concept behind Bluetooth is a 'personal WAN' i.e. not Wide at all,
but a wireless network nonetheless. I think the range is c5m only. But a
hands-free headset (no wires) and painless intercomms between all your
nifty devices (mp3, camera, printer, etc), while seated at your desk /
car / airplane / etc. seems to be the vision driving it. Low power.
- One mobile personal network for each individual consumer / worker.
