I haven't found any definitive documentation or central registry for these
things. It actually turns out to be kind of a pain when these sorts of
discussions come up, because there's nowhere to point people...
SUSv3 mentions "oh, EDITOR or VISUAL might be set" but doesn't discuss the
meaning of them at all. The Art of Unix Programming mentions them, mentions
the visual vs line based thing in a footnote, and vaguely recommends that
new programs just look for EDITOR.
