The reasons for the condescending answer are:
 * The subscribe/unsubscribe instructions are in the headers.
 * This question has been asked and answered on regular occasions.

It's also mentioned in the welcome message that you get when you first
subscribe, including an explicit request to NOT DELETE the
information.

However, instead of being smart, why not just post the information?

Welcome to the linux-users mailing list

PLEASE KEEP THIS MESSAGE - IT CONTAINS INFORMATION ON HOW TO STOP MAIL
FROM THIS LIST BEING SENT TO YOU.

linux-users is the mailing list for information concerning the linux
operating system.

There are three email addresses associated with this list:

[email protected]
will send mail to all the people on the linux-users list

[EMAIL PROTECTED]
will send mail to a real person who maintains the list.

[EMAIL PROTECTED]
will send mail to the automatic Mailserv processor.
The possible instructions are listed below.

HELP - Sends a help file.
       This command takes no parameters.

SUBSCRIBE LINUX-USERS

UNSUBSCRIBE LINUX-USERS

This is the command you should use if you want to stop receiving mail
  from this list.

END - Terminates MAILSERV processing; subsequent message contents are
ignored. This command is useful when signatures are
automatically appended to messages. Such signatures are likely
to cause errors if MAILSERV sees them.

PLEASE AVOID SENDING MAIL TO THESE LISTS WITH CONFIRM READING OR CONFIRM
RECEIPT OPTIONS ENABLED

The section below supplies some broad guidelines on how to use mailing
lists.

Hints for Using Mail Lists
---------------------------

Do not send any administrative mail (especially subscribe or unsubscribe
messages) to the actual mailing list. Use listname-request or
listname-owner.

When replying to a message, decide whether you want to reply to the
whole list, or just the original sender. Usually the whole list is the
default. Check the TO: line of your reply, and edit it manually if
required.

When you reply to a message, and include the previous message in your
reply, edit the message so that only the relevant parts of the previous
message are included.

Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED] with any problems associated with
this system.
