Yeah. Debian Etch is shorter, and you clearly knew what I meant ;)

You can force synchronous probing by specifying scsi_mod.scan=sync on the
kernel command line.  You could also try suppling rootdelay=5 (where 5 is a
number of seconds to wait before attempting to mount the root filesystem).
I've got no idea if either of these will work around your specific problem.

Cheers. I had already tried scsi_mod.scan=sync but it appeared to make no difference. rootdelay=10 ended up working.

There's an existing bug (401916) about this in the Debian BTS.  You might
want to read that for some more background.

Thanks, searching on the BTS did not immediately bring that up for me before I posted, but I'll keep an eye on that bug now.
