Well its worth a try. If we make them small enough it doesn't matter that
people have to download the whole thing anyway.

Hmm, not sure on that.

I really am no expert on encoding to ensure the maximum number of people
using dodgy OSes can view them.

If you want the smallest files at the greatest quality per byte, x264 is
the video codec of choice.

If you want everyone to be able to watch them, wmv or mov are the best
containers.
