I acquired a serial cable from someone who does lot of connecting to devices 
through serial ports.

It is a standard serial cable with a small ribbon serial cable attached to the 
end. There are several crimp on connectors on the ribbon and prior to the 
terminating connector the individual wires from the ribbon required for a 
cross over  are separated and crossed over.

This make it trivial to change the type of connection
