well it didn't go too well trying to put feisty fawn on a laptop with a couple of ntfs partitions and windows installation present. the resize of the sufficiently large data partition basically deleted the partition. with hindsight i ought to have run a disk utility over it to move all the data into a contiguous chunk at the beginning or end, and this may have given me a successful result.
anyway, after recreating some partitions from the newly freed space, this kubuntu install also went smoothly. time to supplement my distro experience beyond just suse, i think . . .
