OK, this is an old problem that's raised itself to the top of the list. I've
got an old lappie - a tosh 5205, which has run most linux distros in its time,
and all have had the same problem.

If I leave the machine untouched, it starts the usual power saving stuff,
blanking the screen, etc. Eventually, I end up in a situation where I can hit
the return key, and see the disk activity light flicker, but no way can I get
anything on the screen. All I can do is hold my finger on the power button
until it starts to shut down.

I've tried removing xscreensaver, but that doesn't help. I take it that I need
to learn a lot more about ACPI and the like. Any pointers, anyone???

Also, the cd in this machine has failed. It was a Teac dw 224e dvd reader/cd
writer. Any idea where I can get a replacement, or, more importantly, whether I
can upgrade to a dvd writer... which one.

All ideas gratefully received.

Cheers,

Steve
