Well that makes every difference. You can't get around having to scan first before you can select a reduced scan area, unless you scan full size and crop later, or scan full size and make use of the auto-crop function of the scanner software to only save the area of interest. Otherwise (ok unless you give the scan size in cm) you'll have to pre-scan first. You didn't say, but one would guess that the settings for brigthness, contrast etc change for each scan too. That's pretty much a killer for automation (which works best with repetitive tasks).
