the next best 'out of the box' solution for a pci modem that i can think

Rik's other choice is apt-get install konqueror (the fish protocol library
is actually in kdebase-kio-plugins).
..will spare my hard drive this pressure, but may offer the student a
modem upgrade to external as the most direct repair of connection issue.
And get a good geez @Mepis as well - just in case! Gotta keep those
skills moving..
