Just another infobit. Menu.lst had been configured to have GRUB timeout in 3 seconds. Usually, I get messages from GRUB prompting me to hit the Esc key to display the kernel menu at boot. Since this problem has appeared, I don't get that prompt anymore, so I suspect something's amiss even before the kernel gets to be loaded.
