I thought that I would give Ubuntu and Kubuntu a serious chance as desktops for my family - it seemed to be a bit "prettier" than Mepis, and some things were more up to date.
After 3 weeks we are back to Mepis and happy. Multimedia stuff mostly works without any extra downloads or fiddling. Same applies to NVidia. Samba sharing is so easy with Mepis and KDE (just right click on the folder you want to share and follow your nose) No problems with Mepis printing to LPD queue. Ubuntu / Kubuntu would print only one file but for printing a second we needed to restart - this happened on 3 different pc's. Ubuntu / Kubuntu Kernel update caused heaps of problems including failure to boot. There is a thread about this (but still no fix) on Ubuntu forums which is, at last look, at least 48 pages long.
