I thought that I would give Ubuntu and Kubuntu a serious chance as desktops 
for my family - it seemed to be a bit "prettier" than Mepis, and some things 
were more up to date.

After  3 weeks we are back to Mepis and happy.

Multimedia stuff mostly works without any extra downloads or fiddling.
Same applies to NVidia.

Samba sharing is so easy with Mepis and KDE (just right click on the folder 
you want to share and follow your nose)

No problems with Mepis printing to LPD queue. Ubuntu / Kubuntu would print 
only one file but for printing a second we needed to restart - this happened 
on 3 different pc's.

Ubuntu / Kubuntu Kernel update caused heaps of problems including failure to 
boot. There is a thread about this (but still no fix) on Ubuntu forums which 
is, at last look, at least 48 pages long.
