It's very irritating as Google has been particularly unhelpful and what
the heck is the chrome protocol I thought chrome was a mozilla skin?
Not skin, all of the non-browser area UI is called chrome. The view source
window that you're having problems with is written in XUL (stored in the
file chrome://global/content/viewSource.xul) and shipped with Thunderbird.
The chrome: protocol is a way to reference and load these internal chrome
resources.
