Hello,

In case you're wondering why I've been so quiet on the list, I'm preparing
to leave New Zealand to go and teach English in Japan. I'd like to thank
the CLUG community for being so vibrant and interesting, and I shall
continue to read list postings in the future.

In the meantime, I am trying to get Japanese input working with GUI apps
(such as KMail, OpenOffice and FireFox) under KDE. I have read every
HOWTO, FAQ, and tiny snippet of info, but it's still not quite working.

I am running Mepis 6.5 on a ThinkPad 600x. Things mostly work, but I have
some tweaking to do. I want my desktop to be in English, and to have the
facility of switching to a different mode for typing Japanese. I know this
is possible, and as far as the Japanese input goes I have reached this
point:

* the canna server is installed and working
* kinput2 is running
* environment variables are set
* Japanese fonts are installed

Japanese characters are displayed correctly when I visit Japanese websites,
and if I cut and paste the characters from one app to another.

My success is limited so far to being able to run KTerm (how useful!) and
pressing Shift+Space to switch to Japanese input mode and then typing
Romaji and seeing it displayed in Kanji. This is quite impressive, but
KTerm doesn't really cut it for me. I believe I should be able to do the
same thing in OpenOffice or any other GUI app., viz, press Shift+Space and
start entering Japanese.

Has anyone on the list got this working in the way I think it should?
Remote possibility I know, but any advice would be appreciated- I have
exhausted all that Google can provide.

Best wishes,

Andrew
