Update - vmware server is actually functioning, my earlier conclusion that it
was not was based on no results from which or whereis commands - I was
incorrectly passing them vmware-server instead of just vmware. And there was
(and still is) no entry for vmware server on the KDE menu. If I give the right
command! or use a desktop icon (made under kubuntu) it runs fine, and the guest
machine can access the host without issue.
