Hi, For the archives (and I suppose I should put this on the Wiki), I just sent a fax with KdePrintfax. Here are the details:
Firstly, I have an IBM ThinkPad 600X with a built-in WinModem. The modem is supported by the ltmodem module, and was detected and installed automagically by my Mepis 6.5 installation. The modem is fax capable. Secondly, KdePrintfax was installed, using Efax as a backend. I have not tried to receive a fax, just sending. Thirdly, I have no scanner... I took a photo of the document I wished to send. I used the 'text' setting on my digital camera, which makes the camera record a black-and-white TIF image. The original image was 2048x1536, landscape format, 1bpp at a declared resolution of 72x72dpi. It was also compressed with Fax G4 compression. There are two steps needed to make this work (don't ask me how I know, but it took a while). Step 1: Rotate the image and change its declared resolution % convert original.tif -rotate 270 -density 204x196 temp.tif Step 2: Change from G4 compression to G3 compression % tiffcp temp.tif -c g3 faxme.tif I found that the two necessary packages, ImageMagick and tiffcp, were already installed on the machine. Now just run KdePrintfax, select the faxme.tif file, set the destination fax number and off it goes. Have fun! Andrew
