This turned out to be trivial. I connected the drive to my ubuntu system, force mounted it as ntfs-3g (it always seems to be scheduled for a check and has to be forced to mount). Then used nautilus to change the name of the directory!
When I plug it back into the windows server on monday, all should be well. K
